What is Oral Thrush And How Does One Get It?

Oral Thrush is a condition caused by the overgrowth of the Candida albicans fungus, commonly known as yeast, in the mouth.  Candida is a parasitic type fungus that inhabits the intestines, genital tract, mouth, esophagus, and throat.  Normally this fungus lives in healthy balance with the other bacteria and yeasts in the body, however, certain conditions can cause it to multiply, weaken the immune system further and cause an acute infection.  Symptoms of Oral Thrush include creamy-looking white patches on the tongue and mucous membranes of the mouth.  If the patches are scraped off, bleeding may result.

Practical Tips For Avoiding Oral Thrush

• Eat a diet of 60 to 70 percent raw foods.  Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and moderate amounts of broiled fish and broiled skinless chicken.

• Do not eat any foods containing sugar or refined carbohydrates.  Fungi thrive on sugar.

• Eliminate those foods from the diet that tend to promote secretion of mucus, especially meat and dairy products.

• Avoid cola drinks, grains, processed foods, and fried, greasy foods.

• If you have been treating a fungal infection on your own and you develop symptoms of a worsening infection such as redness and swelling or fever, consult you physician.
